Privacy Policy — Membrew

Effective Date: February 2026

Last Updated: February 2026

Overview

Membrew is a Chrome extension that digests web articles, YouTube videos, and PDFs — helping you build a searchable memory of everything you read. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data we access, how it is processed, and how it is stored.

Data We Access

Web Page Content

Membrew reads the text content of web pages, YouTube transcripts, and PDFs that you choose to digest. This content is accessed only when you actively use the extension (e.g., click "Digest").

Settings

Your preferences (processing mode, language, API keys) are stored locally in your browser using Chrome's storage API.

How Data Is Processed

Membrew offers three processing modes. You choose which mode to use:

On-Device Mode (Default)

Content is processed entirely on your device using Chrome's built-in AI (Gemini Nano). No data leaves your browser. No login or API key is required.

Client API Mode

Content is sent directly from your browser to Google (Gemini) or OpenAI APIs using your own API key. Data flows directly between your browser and the API provider — it does not pass through our servers.

Server Mode

Available to logged-in users. Content is sent to our server for processing and memory storage. Enables cross-device sync, semantic search, and AI integration (MCP). Free for all users.

Data Storage

  • Digests and settings are stored locally in your browser using chrome.storage.local.
  • If you create an account and choose to save, your digests and original content are stored on our servers as memories for cross-device sync and semantic search. You can delete your data at any time.
  • Cached digests are stored per URL and remain on your device.

Data Sharing

We do not sell, share, or transfer your data to third parties.

In Client API mode, your content is sent to Google or OpenAI per their respective privacy policies.

Membrew is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
