Membrew is a Chrome extension that digests web articles, YouTube videos, and PDFs — helping you build a searchable memory of everything you read. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data we access, how it is processed, and how it is stored.
Membrew reads the text content of web pages, YouTube transcripts, and PDFs that you choose to digest. This content is accessed only when you actively use the extension (e.g., click "Digest").
Your preferences (processing mode, language, API keys) are stored locally in your browser using Chrome's storage API.
Membrew offers three processing modes. You choose which mode to use:
Content is processed entirely on your device using Chrome's built-in AI (Gemini Nano). No data leaves your browser. No login or API key is required.
Content is sent directly from your browser to Google (Gemini) or OpenAI APIs using your own API key. Data flows directly between your browser and the API provider — it does not pass through our servers.
Available to logged-in users. Content is sent to our server for processing and memory storage. Enables cross-device sync, semantic search, and AI integration (MCP). Free for all users.
We do not sell, share, or transfer your data to third parties.
In Client API mode, your content is sent to Google or OpenAI per their respective privacy policies.
Membrew requests the following Chrome permissions:
| Permission | Purpose |
|---|---|
| activeTab / tabs | Access the current page to extract content for digesting |
| scripting | Inject content scripts to read page content |
| storage / unlimitedStorage | Store your settings and cached digests locally |
| sidePanel | Display the digest interface in Chrome's side panel |
| notifications | Notify you when background tasks complete |
| identity | Handle login authentication flow |
| Host access (*://*/*) | Read content from any webpage you choose to digest |
Login is optional. Creating an account enables memory storage, cross-device sync, semantic search, and AI integration (MCP). Authentication is handled through Auth0. Tokens are stored locally.
Membrew is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last Updated" date.
